Franz Ferdinand (IMISSMYJUNO remix)

Ok, it took me about a week and a half to finish it but now the remix of Franz Ferdinand’s Ulysses for the Beatportal contest is finally complete. I released it under my new artist name of IMISSMYJUNO, and if you’re at all familiar with this weblog you’ll know the choice of the name was not accidental :). Well, I do, I really do miss it. At least it’s genuine and not like Monkey Brain Cocktail Bullets or I don’t know, Frankensteined Sausages or something.

I also quickly put together a small redesign of the myspace page. I’ve got an entire site layout in Illustrator but I just didn’t have the time to put out an entire website for you myspace haters (not much of a fan here either). I promise - NO fixed backgrounds or GIF animations that crash your browser of any kind.

I don’t know what will become of the earpick name. I’ve gone through a few name changes already, but recently I’ve just got tired of that baggage of tracks that I kept carrying over and was never entirely happy with that I decided it’s time to start over. I do have a certain amount of more ‘clean’ electronic music (prog house mostly). Recently I got blowintopieces.com out of boredom, might utilize that for just those few tracks. It’s always a struggle to fit the weird tracks under the same ‘brand name’ with an established sound. I’m not quite sure how other musicians out there deal with multiple musical interests. I know a few do just that - set up multiple names and release tracks of different genres under corresponding monickers.

How do you write your tunes?

from Montreal<

There’s been a lot going on lately. It doesn’t really help this supposedly audio related blog that my full-time job is in web design and there is also photography in the picture (ha!).

To add to all that, there is the added pressure of Fluke users to improive it + I’ve been working on a super-secret social/community type of website with a good friend of mine, along with trying to finish some of those new tracks that I have cooking. I’m a little tired of putting music off and never finishing the tracks that I think have potential.

How often does that happen to you? And how do you write your music anyway?

In the world of electronic music the creative process seems to be quite different than sitting down with a guitar or a lined piece of paper to write lyrics on. Let’s face it — a lot of electronic musicians are not very musical people. We are often gear nerds, knob fiddlers or both. Not to say that can’t get you off your ass and start dancing, it’s mostly about the beat after all. But few have the skill or education to write complex melodic pieces.

When it comes to electronic music, I personally start out with a 4 or 8 beat loop and build it up until I have almost all the tracks the finished piece would. They may not sound great altogether but I just selectively mute and solo the parts I like and jot down notes about it onto a piece of paper or into Google Notebook. And then when time comes, if it does, I just sort of extend everything out of that one loop into a full song.

The upside is that I can get a lot of ideas in quickly cause when the musical/knob muse comes along she usually doesn’t stay around much. The downside though is that unless I jot down detailed notes, later on when extending the piece I often struggle to maintain the same level of momentum and excitement in the piece. It seems to me that after it’s all done, it sounds like a boring ’staircase’ build-up to that one 4-8 beat loop. Lately I’ve been able to partially solve the problem by having multiple 4-beat loops spread out on the timeline that capture different moments in the track like snapshots, and later on it’s easier to come back to those same ideas and just build transitions between them.

That approach works for me because initially I don’t often have a clear idea of where I want to go with the piece. I might be in a certain mood, or feel like making some weird noises, or just want to fiddle around with synths, which ends up becoming a track of some sort. Hardware synths or controllers are great for that - quite easy to toy around with a hands-on approach.

Speaking of fiddling and new tracks, there are a few new ones that I would like to release and have decided to dedicate regular time to. One is a remix for the upcoming Ferdinand contest, that’s a must, although it was quite greedy of them to only include the guitar in the free stems. Secondly, an electro-track for which I after some fun time with Ultrabeat synthesized an entire drum kit, along with some fun sound FX. It’s coming up, promise. I have a new updated website in the works with MP3s available.

Let me know how you make your tunes.

Yeah beatchh.

Not as a musician though, but as a photographer slash model. Kick ass either way! Thanks to Tyler and Zoya of HM.

What’s up #N

double rainbow<

Ok, the lists for to-do’s, to-learn’s and to-program’s are growing pretty as far as Fluke is concerned. Add to that the already humongous lists of alcoholic drinks and ice cream flavours I want to try and a new job I recently got, and that definitely provides for something to do over the weekends.

In the next post I will summarize the main to-do’s that were requested in the comments and clarify some issues that I may not be able to fix in the next version of Fluke. After all I’m not Gendalf.

Tape, film and rock&roll

<

It’s time you found out about a little dirty secret — photography has been a hobby I’ve been quite dedicated to for about two years now. In fact, when it came to selling my equipment months ago prior to moving here to Toronto the decision needed to be made whether I will be bringing most of my photo or audio gear. I ended up selling (waa) my Juno-106, the 16-track Fostex tape machine, the mixing board, and almost all of the microphones and remaining audio gear. Granted, audio gear is much heavier than photo, plus I did sell some of my vintage film cameras like the (waaa) Yashicamat. But the choice has been made.

Now, over the past 2 years I’ve been uploading new work to my Flickr account on a fairly regular basis, and the involvement with all things photo, especially film and Polaroid cameras, has been steadily growing since day 1. For the longest time I tried to resist the desire to merge interests wishing to keep it strictly about audio and full of useful information and not turning this into an ‘everything’ blog where I talk about personal nonsense. But, as it stands, the limited amount of free time on my part doesn’t allow for a full-featured well-updated audio-only weblog I’d like this to be. And today I just kind of came to the realization that this is my blog anyway, so I can do whatever the fuck I want.

So, what does this mean to you? More pictures, same amount of audio info. Some camera talk, perhaps. Oh my, will you hear me bitching about the death of Polaroid! And some photography tips and news too; audio nerds — learn how to apply lame Photoshop filters and add light saber effects!

Donations and stuff

I’m alive! Yes indeed. I’ve recently finished a move to a new place closer to Downtown Toronto and am slowly trying to get back into finishing up some of the music and blog posts I’ve started a while ago. Fluke has also been proving popular, and while I may not had seemed too responsive, there is a list of notes in my Google Notebook with all the ideas and problems you guys have told me about in the comments. Quite appreciate all the feedback, glad it’s working out for (most of) you.

Speaking of that, in the previous post I’ve asked if you would be fine with a donations button, and the response has been positive. So there it is, I’ve finally managed to fire up Illustrator and throw together a button. No minimum donations or anything like that, whatever you feel like donating is greatly appreciated. Should give me more incentive to focus on things that matter =).

Truly yours, Dmitry-earpick

And we’re back

Ok, so after Google Code started acting up, I temporarily moved the Fluke installer to my own server. Which, sooner than I hoped, ate my entire month’s bandwidth. I have just finished moving the entire site to a brand new server provided by my good friend Marko at OpenTopic.org. It appears that Fluke is gaining momentum, and ever since the failure of my ad placement experiment, I’ve been give donations a though.

What do you think? Is Fluke good enough to donate a few bucks so it can stay alive?

Fluke - Play FLAC files in iTunes

Fluke LogoEver since I wrote the post about listening to FLACs in iTunes I had received quite a few responses indicating public’s general interest in the topic. And while I tried to keep the instructions simple, it was still not quite… Mac-like (damn you Jobs, how spoilt hath we become).

So, to celebrate my weblog being moved to a dedicated host, and after two sleepless nights, I humbly present to you Fluke, a Mac approach to listening to FLACs. Download, install and use. No moving files around, dragging libraries or following stupid instructions by someone who thinks he’s funny.

I’ve written out a pretty clear how-to on Fluke’s main page, but to sum it all up, all you really have to do is download and install the thing, and open your FLACs with it. Or just drag them onto Fluke’s icon.

Let me know how you like it, and make sure to leave a comment if it acts up. Not too complicated a program to act up but it is my first effort.

Updates

I’ve been so busy with all sorts of work lately that I’m hardly finding time to update this place. No, I don’t want to abandon it. On the contrary. I even gave the design a bit of a facelift! What I’m thinking though, is perhaps I should post articles on everything I do in general.

Music composing is my favourite hobby which, unfortunately, I can hardly dedicate time to as of late. Most of the time is generally spent on web design, illustration work, and photography (speaking of that, I gotta put up a website with my work on there for you check out as well). Most recently I’ve been helping out with the graphics for Box O’Deals, an eBay store my friend has set up which focuses on deals (duh) and more importantly bundling them together for even crazier discounts. The situation will get better overall though — I am planning to dedicate regular hours to music, get it into a habit so to speak.

It’s like this — I have around 3-4 instrumental electronic tracks which exist in the form of short pieces in Logic that are just waiting around to be expanded into full tracks, about 2-3 compositions which are full length already but just need touching up, and 2 different versions of the same track we recorded with Rachael for Coast Green over a year ago that I’m yet to work on. The latter in particular is somewhat of a curse, since it’s a track that has pretty much imploded from its own weight: in total we have recorded at least 2 hours of various vocal takes. Most of them are for harmonizing, as well as some special FX we have recorded outdoors, weird percussions and samples of objects outdoors and around the house that make for interesting noises to be used in the composition. And, of course, the sheer amount of that recorded material is precisely what makes me keep putting it all off. At least I backed it all up a few times so I can actually get to finishing it up before my hard drives die. Not funny, as it happened to my previous HDD. Though I don’t like any of those unfinished tunes anymore anyway. Or that’s what I want to think at least.

Anyway, if anybody cares to answer, let me know:

Do you think posts unrelated to audio would be appropriate or should I keep a lower post count but all related to music?

P.S. A post on Logic Studio coming up!

(Composing the) Surreality Soundtrack

Ok, so I have been doing something in my absence. Yes, not posting here is one of those things, but I’ve also been composing a soundtrack for a film with a fairly tight deadline. That was FUN. Check out the mp3’s (Part 2 is my favourite):

I’ve checked the movie website but it looks like there is no trailer up. I’ll bug the director to upload something. For those who are bored or curious, read on the details on the film and how this was all done.
